Docta Ignorantia XI

The Sea Turtle

By Lori Hall and Mackie

There is a wondrous sea turtle
A friend told me of, once.
A singular rarity -- for it has a crystal shell.
Graven upon its shell
     Are Names of God
     Are Hallowed Names of Devotees.

My friend told me
This turtle fears nothing -- for it knows
It carries its refuge with it, wherever it goes.

For when the samsaric sea in which it swims
Becomes dark, doubtful, monstrous
It simply pulls itself into its crystalline refuge
And views the turbulent world outside
     Through the Names of God
Through the Hallowed Names of Devotees

And knows peace.
