Docta Ignorantia XLIII

The Mother

By David R. Graham

It is time to replace the Mother in the liturgy. Not She generically but She in Her specifically Christian apotheosis as Mary of Bethany, who is Mary Magdalene. It can be asserted as true that the Church can be a fecund presence in our global community only if the Inseparable Other in Her specifically Christian incarnation is at the center of Christian Faith and Piety with Her Lord and Consort.

You are no doubt aware, at least intuitively, that this will require expansions of both canon and kerygma. In addition, it will obviate the Nicene Creed and to some extent the Chalcedonian.1 Finally, it will draw fire from gay and lesbian cabals, which take themselves for subtending ecclesiastical and educational judicatories.

The Catholic churches -- Greek, Roman, Anglican -- are in the senescence of their life cycle. The Manichean churches -- Fundamentalists -- are regressive and sterile. The Protestant churches are adrift, moving variously through Manicheanism, Renaissance recensions of Helleno/Egyptian Astral Hermeticism (New Age), Cultic Eroticism and mixtures of those things and more. Nowhere in sight -- except individually and, significantly, among the catechumens of Bishop Lefebvre-- is the sole source of ecclesiastical renewal: vigorous ascetical eremiticism.2

The meaning is: the Mother is absent. The She without Whom there isn't a thing must be replaced at the center of Christian Faith and Piety and at the crux of the liturgy. She must be present not generically but specifically as Mary of Bethany, Mary Magdalene. This can be done because it's how the Story actually went. It must be done because it's the only way the religion and the church can be an ingenious presence in the now and future context of global community.

The Petrine Church has run its course. It's aim was to supplant the Church founded by the Master. Now it is time for the Master's Church to reemerge and reopen the floodgates of Grace. Your challenge is to effect the conversion. It is a task that can be done ... and will be done.

I hope you will accept my well wishes both for your personal and for your professional careers.

1 These have not been standards of the Faith -- much less baptismal confessions, their original purpose -- for some centuries. On the operational level, church faith and life world-wide have been versions of unitarian monophysitic docetism since before the days of Locke and Leibnitz. To obviate the main creeds theologically would be a step of recapturing professional leadership of church faith and life at the operational level, where that leadership has been totally absent for thirty years.
2 The last thing today's church leadership value is the traditional and only source of Faith and Culture: renunciation. In fact, today's church leadership spend energy, in possession of which they have little enough, to take pleasure jeering at the foundational Christian ascetics (and canon-makers), Paul and Jerome, and in bullying renunciates to live of the tones and tints of modern times, as they do.
